It’s just too obvious which way to go with this teaser leg. The Carolina Panthers are the clear choice here as they look at least semi-legit in Matt Rhule’s second year. Yes, the Houston Texans got off to a great start in Week 1, but what was always a fragile roster has started to come apart with injuries.
Without QB Tyrod Taylor and two of their top receivers, I give this Houston team next to no shot. Davis Mills is not ready to face what’s looking like a top defense from Carolina, especially not after posting a 10.1 QBR last week. The Panthers have all the playmakers in this game and should be able to control it with Christian McCaffrey.
I smell blowout, but being able to move this line under a field goal is the best option.

Did I mention that Houston’s starting quarterback tonight has a career 10.1 QBR? Rookie Davis Mills will have all kinds of trouble against a Panthers team that through two weeks leads the NFL in defensive DVOA. It’s true that those numbers have been built up against two suspect offenses, but what is this Texans offense if not highly suspect?
The Panthers haven’t shown a lot of explosiveness on offense themselves, and both of their games have only hit 33 points as a result. Carolina should dictate the tempo of this game, shorten it with their running ability, and hold down this weakened Texans offense to keep it under the teased total.
